Portsmouth Historic Dockyard set hold Dementia Awareness Day

Those living with dementia are invited to attend a special Dementia Awareness Day at The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on 22nd September.

The day-long programme, which costs £3 per person, includes a guided tour of First World War ship HMS M.33, museum gallery activities, a drop-in tour of HMS Victory plus a well-being workshop.

Learning and engagement officer Rachel Goodall, is the National Museum’s Dementia Friends champion. This year she has been training colleagues on how to help those living with dementia get the best from their visits and is she attends a nationwide Dementia Friendly Heritage Resource group.

Rachel said: 'It is well known that more and more people are living with dementia. We are working hard creating a dementia-friendly visitor experience for all those living with dementia and their carers.

'We want our community, including our veterans, to know we are here as a place to visit, with staff who understand. In a world that is forever changing and sometimes confusing, we offer a safe environment to remember our culture and national identity.'
