Luxury tourism

What does luxury mean to you? Maybe comfort, opulence, exclusivity or a special treat?  It could be a weekend at a five-star hotel or a lie-in on a Sunday morning.

A quick survey (well, a chat around the coffee machine) in the TSE office came up with some surprising notions.

‘It’s the little unexpected touches, little surprises, that delight’.

‘A welcome pack at a rural cottage that included everything you could possibly need, plus a juicy fresh pineapple!’

‘Beautiful cut glasses... and a quiet little reading nook stocked with books.’

‘Stylish furnishings, beautiful lamps, fresh flowers in your room or holiday rental property’.

‘Local, quality produce makes a difference, like free range eggs’.

‘High quality linens on the bed, and a beautifully thick mattress for a good night’s sleep’.

‘A personal service, for instance, when hotel staff remember your name’.

It’s taking time to enjoy a beautiful sunset, to relax with friends and family, or some time out on your own. It’s an empty beach, a crystal-clear rock pool or the sand between your toes. It’s a view from the top of a mountain or a tall building that goes on forever.

It’s about feeling special, being seen and heard, allowing someone to do something special for you, and being appreciative. It’s about warm everyday interactions with the world around you. It’s about possibilities and freedom, and a feeling that you are a part of something extraordinary.

Luxury travel is not just about 5-star hotels and the infinity pools that have multiplied on Instagram. Luxury is having extraordinary experiences and that is something open to everyone.
